Prior to 1958, chance relics were found attesting to Caesarea's glorious past, and since 1959 the city's remains have been exposed in systematic excavations conducted by expeditions from various research institutions. Several factors, primarily the developed harbour, combined to make Caesarea the hub of economic activity embracing land and sea.

"Caesarea - a Mercantile City by the Sea" assembles archaeological finds illuminating aspects of Caesarea as a flourishing commercial city: Sebastos harbour, warehouses, storage vessels and imported vessels. The exhibition is based principally on discoveries and finds that are the fruit of archaeological expeditions working in Caesarea uninterruptedly since 1992 as part of the Project for the Development of Tourism at Caesarea.
